The last few days, I have been reading articles on the war in Sudan and trying to wrap my brain around this mind-boggling catastrophe.
Volker Türk, the UN Human Rights Chief, made a spot-on quote describing the situation: 'This is not just another conflict. It is a human rights catastrophe unfolding in real time.'
Delving into this unfolding crisis, it is easy to understand why the public's interest slowly wanes. Chaos to this degree overwhelms the curious, making it easy to turn a blind eye and give up.
However, we cannot dismiss the fact that Western media has made little effort in their reporting. It seems the only active players informing us are the brave people at the United Nations. Kudos and God bless them in their effort to keep hope alive.
Below, I found a short video explaining the tragedy there. It is the best I could find.
This is a pretty accurate report on the madness going on in Sudan.. Though I wish they'd go more into the role of identity into the stoopidity of it all. Wole Soyinka, in the Nigerian context, lays out how Islam's presence in Nigeria created some cleavages that remain damaging to the country's overall stability. I posted about it here very early on.
I still believe that Islam (slavery & religion) did more damage to the cultural identity & unity of Africans than was done by Christianity. Christianity, to my observation, permitted more access & flow & freedom between native traditions rooted in ancient African beliefs than Islam, which was more binding and stricter on its African adherents. It was harder to escape Islam than it was to get out of Christianity etc. Just my opinion.
LOL.. notice how easily and freely the term genocide was used in the Sudan context, and rightfullly so; yet it's almost taboo to use the term in the Israel Gaza context. Even more laughable is the United States declaring that the RSFs actions in Sudan "amounts to a genocide". And now the US refuses to call what Israel is doing in Gaza a genocide, and punishes & sanctions anyone - including Navi Pillay - who refers to it as one. Hypocrites!
At least Omar Hassan al-Bashir is at the ICC, I think. Good!
