My view on the Department of Education
The Department of Education was created when I was in high school. Ever since I had delivered the daily newspaper for 5 years, I’ve been an avid consumer of daily newspaper. I followed this closely at the time. I remember the arguments FOR creating the department. When created, existing programs like student financial aid was pulled out of other departments like Treasury and HHS. The thought was that with a dedicated Cabinet level oversight to prioritize education, they would get better educational outcomes.
The main PRO argument and promise from proponents was this would improve education results across the country with particular focus on states with subpar education results. I can’t emphasize enough that was the main argument. As a high school student, I thought it was a pretty good idea. I supported its creation.
From the start, the main CON was that it was unconstitutional. The constitution enumerates 17 powers to the federal government and the 10th amendment says that all other powers are left to the States or the people. Education is not one of those enumerated powers.
Unfortunately, after nearly 50 years, the Department of Education has failed in achieving its primary goal. By all measures, education outcomes are worst today than when the Department was created. It’s time to do something different. The dismantling of the department of education won’t take money away from the classroom. States primarily fund the classroom.
One criticism of this action is the elimination of Special Ed funding. It is true that the federal government is currently the primary funding source for Special Ed, so that should move to Health and Human Services where it belongs. Student Loans should move to Treasury. PELL Grants and other grant aid move to Commerce. Most other functions should move back to the states where they belong. The Federal Government still provide other funding through what they call Block Grants. Then states would control how the funds are used to fulfill the objective of improving education outcomes. Anything else that is currently funded should just be eliminated.
As for the current employees, since they apparently have a heart for education, the classroom needs good people everywhere across the country.
