Does anybody know a GOOD & FREE PDF editor?

Please do NOT tell me to use ADOBE's editor because it is a piece of XXXX, even though ADOBE invented the format. PDF's are a TERRIBLE format, but sometimes it is necessary to edit them.

Any ideas?
