I know a man who blew all his savings and then got arrested for the efforts he made to save his drug addicted daughter. She did not even appreciate any of it, saying that as a dad it was "his duty".

I know a couple who bought a house so that their kids could rent it from them at a discounted rate. The kids never pay the rent.

My wife is the toughest person I know. When a very close relative, who is an addicted gambler, called and cried that she had written hot checks to a casino and might be arrested so she needed to borrow money my wife told her that she needed to sell some of her valuables to pay it. She refused to pay off anyone's gambling losses. She correctly called it "throwing money down a black hole."
