I have often thought the right and the left wing are attached to the same bird - uniparty. And the uniparty has been in power for a very long time.
For example, once Republicans regained control of the Senate - there were still not steps taken to rein in some of the uglier provisions of the Affordable Care Act, regardless of how many campaign promises were made by Senators to 'fix it'.
Kabuki theater by each side (wing of the bird) but in the end - the American public is still run into debt, dealing with a myraid of things that make life difficult - and paying for all those lovely salaries of people who accomplish little more than a 5 minute soundbite for votes.
In my opinion, Trump's original popularity sprang from his being viewed an outlier. And, for the most part, he certainly is. But - there still isn't much getting done outside of EO's that will expire when he leaves office.
