From an early age he was patriotic and particularly loved freedom.
He grew to realize that you cannot depend on man/ government for freedom; it can only come from God. So he believed that people who really loved freedom, when they understood its source would understand why we should love and defend both our God and our country, realizing that man could and should both honor and protect our freedom, this democratic experiment being dependent on God for success.

Also, in one of his conversations with a young Christian who was about to go into military service, the young man was concerned about the object of his commitment to service, especially considering the issue of bad government. Charlie reminded him that there is a significant difference between service for the country and its people vs the government. A good point, while still remembering that the President is the military chief of staff.
