USA famously built circa 100,000 aircraft per year. This sounds good, BUT there was a problem. Aircraft MECHANICAL FAILURES produced more lost aircraft (and pilots) than were lost due to enemy action.

Wouldn't we have been better off spending TWICE as much money per aircraft to get HALF AS MANY lost aircraft?
