You're quite right in what you say, John, but as Norman says they are so awash with money they waste it. The thing that sticks in my craw is the fat cat attitude of the BBC and the biased views of its presenters. I don't mind having to pay the licence but if means testing for AOPs is the right way to go then why can't that rule be extended to all age groups. There must be great numbers of householders who cannot afford the payment and goodness knows how many who just don't pay it anyway. How much effort is put in to bring the latter group to book.
I wonder if Mr. Lineker would submit to a means test? I don't suppose he feels any remorse in the massive sums being spent on his Brazilian jolly. The cost to him will only be the equivalent to a bottle of milk...or maybe a packet of crisps!
If all groups had the choice of paying/not paying the licence fee then BBC would be out of business by 2020. You might say that we would then be paying for a 'licence' through our purchase of the goods being advertised in the commercial breaks but at least we would have some choice.
