I enlisted the help of ace detective Barry and Norman brought his trade directories to bear. Both have helped immensely.
Problem is we now have a Grocers on the SW corner of Potter St too!!
My mind tells me that it was Newmarch St but I cant rule out Potter St!!
The shop in Newmarch St was Chapmans in 1936 later Rawlings at No 2.
That on Potter St corner may have Burnetts according to someone on a Jarrow facebook site where Ian Thompson enlisted some aid.
Perhaps we will never know with any certainty.
For Barry. The pics you sent were great but by my time (49/50 onward) Western Rd had already lost the bustle at its western end and was run down. The cross streets on both sides of Palmer Street were pretty grim and decrepit especially Bladen St and Berkeley St which were almost slums. One has to accept that the houses "below the lines" in Jarrow were hastily thrown up as the town burgeoned and were probably poorly built.
