Never wanted money spent on her , her kids came first. There was many an argument in the home , she never wanted ,fancy jewelry, designer clothes ,foreign holidays ,we never had a car. I can remember one family holiday in the 60's ....Scarboro.
So, later in life she started to save . She did'nt want anything ,so spent very little . Maybe she was saving up to give her 2 sons a little money after she had gone . Anyway , in Aug 2016 she was diagnosed with Alzheimers Disease & Vascular Dementia .All the authorities were interested in money ,many finacial assesments went by. She paid for carers ,went into a council run assement home , supposedly for 6 weeks, they kept her in for 17 weeks and changed social workers 3 times .....delaying tactics I wonder . When she left I got a bill for £10,2000. We found her a lovely home where she is looked after but it was self funding , so there goes £835 a week.
So ,it makes you wonder , is it worth saving for old age?. Very little of my mams money is left now , she could have blown the lot if she had wanted. I agree someone has to pay and I dont think the councils should have to foot the bill.
Maybe it was a good job my parents had'nt bought their own house as my brother may have been homeless now as no doubt the house would have to be sold.
Surely there has to be some Government funding , so the elderly can live somewhere nice with dignity whether they have money or not.
