Cycle paths are really for families and slower cyclists and you find that pedestrians wander all over them. I always use them “If They Are Suitable” However the ones that I use are rare and usually remote from roads except in those in Harrogate. I do avoid main roads as much as possible.
I cycle a lot in France. Drivers there are far better drivers than those in U.K. in most circumstances. Cycling wise, way, way better due to the cycling culture on the continent.
Maybe he thought that you did not pass him with enough clearance 1.5 meters. ( police advisory distance) Did you cut in too soon. To pass him did you cross a continuous white line. Before the brow of a hill. These are the common faults that drivers make.
Something you did must have upset him, however small. Usually I just shake my head at silly drivers. I so far have never taken anyone to task, or had to. You never know you could stabbed these days.
I have been driving cars for 60 years now and cycling for over 70. I’ve seen all sorts of cyclists and drivers of all abilities. Just remember that it is very very rare for a cyclist to hurt another person. But drivers, goodness knows how many they hurt each day.
Drive with care
