Numbers 1 to 6 were demolished before WW2 and you can see that Nos. 1/2 were also a shop which must have been directly opposite Arthur Street where I lived. Demolition of Nos. 9 to 24 took place at some time after I left the colliery but you can see that, whilst Nos.1 to 10 had been individual private homes, Nos. 11 to 24 were each divided into two flats but accessed from front (to ground floor) and rear, via wooden stairs (to first floor).
I remember Nellie and Joe? (forgotten his name and surname...age thing) very well and dropped in on them a few times when I came home on leave from the RAF. At one time they told me they were under virtual siege by some local youth who used to bang on their doors and windows at night. Joe was an avid artist and his works were hung all over the back walls of the shop. I would say that he might have been the original 'Banksy' with his mural covering the left gable end of what was left of old Hilda Terrace. Ah, the good old days.
