It would depend on what other things, getting in the way, hols. Jobs, cycling etc. Also depending at what level of expertise one started at. From absolute scratch yes 5 years, with my current experience level 2 years.
However there is one very important thing to take into account.
Some 6 years ago I was able to get in contact with the Grandson of one of my Grandfather Campbell brothers.
Family Contact had been lost somewhere between 1965 and 1980.
This Grandson, Fraser William Campbell put me on to the Free Family Tree software that I use and we did much research together. Regretfully he died in early June this year and I was unable to get to his funeral as in the S of France.
So if starting today I doubt that I would find that lost part of the family. Fraser even remembered my father and grandfather driving up to Glasgow in a little black car and wondered how 2 such big men got into the car.
Fraserís input has been crucial as he was able to get info. From other members of his side that enabled me to go back beyond our G G G/F.. On all documents he was given as Bernard. We found that his death certificate gave Archibald as his birth name and it was Bernardís brother that was the informant and gave Bernardís parents names.
I will miss Fraser greatly, we never met in person but sometimes Spoke on the phone but E Mail was the main communication so nothing was missed.
