BUCHANAN STREET: Hebburn Newtown. Sits between Glen Street and Tennant Street. The east side of Buchanan Street (with odd numbers) shares a back lane with St. Rollox Street.

In 1850, this was arable land, known as ‘Middle East Howdean’; occupied by Ann Glover, and leased from landowner Cuthbert Ellison.
Named after: Likely, Mr. James S. Buchanan, Chairman of the Local Board Office, Hebburn,manager of Tennant’s Works and agent to Mr. Ellison, in 1858.
