The very thought that the Hawthorne Leslie shipyard, Hebburn Park....or even the cemetery might be viewed by the housing developers as prime housing sites is outrageous but, not outside the bounds of possibility. Why? Because the people of Hebburn are no longer in control of their own destiny...sound familiar? Well it should because our whole country is now in a similar delimma.
We must be thankful for indoor netties, taps, central heating, good food, NHS and sanitation but what of our cultural lives? Do we just have to sit in our little boxes with a mobile phone to hand?
Here is a great question to chew over for all the visitors to this website. Could we ask for a listing of all the organised cultural group activities that were available in the post war Hebburn as opposed to those that are available today. If there has been a massive decline then it needs to be addressed because nearly all the space has been gobbled up by housing. The people of Hebburn deserve better and needto have a social/recreational outlets on their doorstep, not just row upon row of living containers.
