They sunk the shaft down to those levels in the mid 1800ís.
How did they know that there was a coal seam at that depth ?.
Reading other articals about the coal mines. Surprised to learn the the Labour governments closed a lot more pits than the Conservatives.
One thing came up was that during the miners strike a lot of profitable pits were lost as the NUM would not allow the miners to carry out safety type work.
My interest is due to having lost family in the 1835 Wallsend disaster.
