The Hutton seam at Felling Colliery was 606ft down, and at Wearmouth over 1400 ft.
They discovered coal seams by using a drilling machine that drilled 1000s of feet down & took core samples. They could measure the coal seams thickness's and at what depth from those samples. The core also showed all the different types of rock. Board regular John from Doncaster could tell us more as he worked in that field (I think)
