Alan you are correct about the closures in terms of number of collieries, however most of the closures under Labour were small inland pits. Whereas those under Thatcher et al were large costal pits employing over 2000 men in the case of Wearmouth.
You are incorrect about the NUM who sanctioned the safety checks and other vital work. As a coal board employee in Scientific Department I was allowed free access to carry out safety checks in the 85 strike and also looked after the ponies at Marley Hill in the 74 strike.
