The NUM had an agreement with NACODS ( Colliery Overmen, Deputies
& Shotfirers) union and BACM (Managers Union) for their members to do essential safety & maintenance work. This continued throughout the protracted strike. As a member of the management union I was heavily involved in such work. After the85 strike the vast majority of mines re-commenced mining coal. As the industry contracted the mines gradually and ultimately closed for political & economical reasons. It was as a consequence of this contraction that I moved to S Yorkshire in 1988 and remained in employment in the Coal Industry until I retired in 2004.
Keep up your researches into our industrial past.
