Re: Today’s Header: Gateshead High Street…
What memories Barry, some of my relatives lived in some of the streets off Sunderland Road, when visiting we always walked along Sunderland Road, many shops along there. At the end of Sunderland Road you turned into Gateshead High Street, oh the shops, fabulous toy shop on the left hand side next to the cinema I think. My mum bought me my first record player in there for Christmas one year, when paying asked for a box of needles, she was told by a salesman, trying not to laugh, that needles weren’t used anymore you had what was called, I think, a stylus.
Then I was sent off to buy some records, the new small records had just arrived, mum didn’t believe I had bought good records as she was looking for the large older type that she was used to.
Then I remember going to Victor Sylvesters dancing class on Saturday mornings, I think I was 10 so that would have been 1960 they were held above the cinema on Gateshead High Street. Also, has been mentioned previously, the fantastic pork butcher selling pork sandwiches, and the herbalist selling home made saspirrella (sp) what memories.
