What an education it was to read the thread about Sawdust Jack and Coffee Johnny yesterday. My mam used to use some of the names mentioned in that thread to describe people when I was a young kid.
When someone couldn't stop coughing, she would say they were, as I heard it , Coughy Johnny. Now I realise that she was saying "Coffee Johnny" and making a play on words.
Anyone who walked around with a cigarette permanently hanging out of their mouth she would call, again as I heard it, Dumper Doss, which must have been Dumper Joss, the man from the Gem cinema.
Two other names she used to say (and again, this is how I heard them as a kid) were Pumper Dixon, for someone who broke wind a lot, and Grumbling Ginger for anyone who was a complainer.
Can anyone shed any light on these? Were they also local characters from days gone by?
