I prefer a 1.5 mile climb up to the A59 as it leads onto flat stuff.
One other way out is simm. But then hilly.
The 2 others steeper. One direct up to A59 but don’t go up that one as A59 there is a “ fast” with no turn-off for 3 miles.
The other steep on is a long drag of 2 miles but I use it if going up into the Dales. Daft I know but I love hill climbing. Now Ellison St. from the river up, would be a good challenge for me as it’s long and unrelenting. There one 4 miles from us that’s a lot longer and harder and I love to clean it.
I ride because I love it, always have since Clegga. It’s keeps you fit without injuring your joints. Used to do a lot of running way back, but a replacement hip stopped any even mild running.
Yes bikes can be expensive. We have 4 very good bike shops in Harrogate 3 close to town and one to the east which is a very specialised one selling their own plus other touring bikes. It’s called Spa Cycles in Starbeck, Harrogate. See their website.
The 3 ones in town have bikes ( I forgot about Halfords) from £ 450 ish up to one I saw last week at £11,500. You have to be really dedicated to buy one of those never mind the lolly.
Regarding the expense of bike clothes. The gear that I buy is budget or bought at a sale. The most expensive things for me are boots and shoes. I have a pair of boots 15 years old which are rarely worn as they are winter off-roading on the MTB.
My older shoes again @ 15 year old still very good but showing their age but still used on MTB.
I bought another pair of shoes for using on my road bike but they are MTB shoes. The difference apart from age is that they are shorter than the old ones and give a greater clearance when on road bike.
I really should replace all my cycle clothing as technology has improved their capability massively, but my old stuff does the job, however the modern stuff vents off far far better but you have to pay the price.
All of this is just to keep me as fit as I can at 77 next week. The local cycle club that I go out with 2 or 3 x a year put me to shame. Lot fitter and some my age or older.
The one good thing is that My suit that I bought for my sons wedding in 2003 still fits it would be a bit tight today as put on weight due to no cycling for a while.
