Geordie is applying for a job as a signalman for the local railway and is told to meet the inspector at the signal box. The inspector asked Geordie, “What would you do if you realized that two trains were heading towards each other on the same track?” Geordie answered, “Ah wid switch one train to another track.” “What if the lever broke?” asks the inspector. “Then ah’d run doon the track and use the manual lever there.” answers Geordie. “What if it had been struck by lightning?” challeges the inspector. “Weel then,” Geordie continued, “Ah’d run back up here and use the phone to call the next signal box.” “What if the phone was being used?” “In that case,” Geordie argued, “ah’d run to the street level and use the public phone near the station.” “What if it had been vandalized?” said the inspector. “Oh weel,” said Geordie, “ah wid run and fetch me mate Charlie.” This puzzled the inspector, so he asked, “Why would you do that?” Geordie replied, “Cos he’s nivvor seen a train crash!”
