However, the resulting tiny photographic print (below) has just surfaced after 63 years of concealment in the folds of some equally old documents…I never throw anything away! Curiousity got the better of me, as it often does, so I copied it to my PC and did my best to clean it up. Yes! The registration could be clearly seen at the base of the tail fin G-AMJU. Time to delve a little deeper. For those interested here are the very basic facts...
G-AMJU was produced in 1942 as a C47B Skytrain, a development of the civilian Douglas DC3. Build No. c/n14480/25925 was registered 43-48664 to the USAF but immediately delivered to the RAF as KJ894. Sold to Scottish Airlines in 1951, it passed to Starways, Silver City, BUA and then to Air Ulster. It was finally transferred to the Congo under Reg.No.9Q-CIR. As far as I am aware it is still registered but in unknown private hands. There are plenty of in service photos of this particular aircraft to found on the internet.
In service with an RAF squadron during WW2 there is every possibility that it took part in either or both the D-Day/Market Garden operations but that will require a bit more research.
