Re: A bit of local interest around White Mare Pool.
According to the OS Roman Map, North Sheet, there was a road that led from Arbeia (South Shields) in a roughly SW direction that intersected another road midway between Pons Aelius (Newcastle) and Concangis (Chester le Street). At a stretch there may well have been some poor legionary got caught short as his unit passed what is now known as White Mere Pool, to spend a penny...we now have the proof.
That place name could well lend itself to what, in Roman times, may have been a popular watering hole for those ancient people to rest and relieve themselves. One other thing, never trust the interpretations of an Archaeologist!
