Well it was for the lads in the drawing office. There were two entrances into the offices. The main one and another at the main gate. There may have been another just inside the yard at the foot of the stairs leading up to the drawing and design offices.
There were 2 ways to get to the drawing office. Up the stairs behind the main gate or up the main staircase that led off the main entrance in the photo.
It was the using of that main staircase which was frowned on.
This was because that staircase was for the directors and maybe the estimating staff. The corridor at top of the stairs. First there were ship models, entrances into Archie White’s office. His secretary Ann Law, ?Board Room? . Tommy Meikle? Chief estimator. Jimmy Haddow the Construction Director. The estimating office maybe.
Then there was a set of swing doors across the corridor for entrance into the drawing office with Tommy Usherwood’s office on the left and maybe the estimating on the right. ( it could have had two doors one into DO. The other into the corridor to get to Meikles office.
Then you were into the drawing office itself.
Any use of that staircase and corridor by us DO lads was frowned on unless delivering documents to the directors etc.
