As I remember it was at its worst when they were chipping the edges of plates.
I would think that each man would hear differently and where you were relative to the piece being worked on.
When we lived in Crawley Ave you could hear the work being done at the Naval Yard and sometimes differentiate between the type of work been done, wind direction had an effect.
Odd I can remember the hooters of the various companies going Dad could tell which was which of some.
