yes norman, i worked at the staithes in 1958,i finished bill quay school on friday, started om the following monday for the NCB,my title was "trade lad", basically a messenger boy delivering letters and documents from ships docked at the staithes to ncb house in birtley,and neville house bottom of westgate road newcastle,i got expenses, bus fares,the wage was £8-10-6,or eight pounds fifty pence now, the waggon men were only getting £12-to £15 per week,the best wages was supposed to be the trimmers,levelling the coal from the chutes into the ships, i never found out what the wages were,i was only there for one year then i started a motor vehicle apprenticeship with adams and gibbon vauxhall bedford dealers in newcastle,
