Re: 18 NOV 1946 – HEBBURN PIT EXPLOSION…
I lived in Tyne st at the time of the exsplosion I remember it,the pit yard was our play ground we always used to light fires,the lads involved were right on top of the pit shaft,you could throw a stone down the shaft it would take many seconds before it hit the bottom with a splash we were dare devels.Had some great times in the pit yard,in the yard we would make dens and some times, in summer spend the night.I knew Normy woodall and his family well they lived a few doors away from the Pawn shop in William st.What has been said about Charlie Gibbs is about right,the other lad involved Roy Gatenby carn,t remember him.
