Bank in Pelaw
Posted by Ken Wood on August 10, 2020, 4:27 pm
Hello to everyone hope you are all well and staying safe. I asked a while back, the subject was, I had heard that there once was a Bank on the front street of Pelaw. Most people disagreed with this, saying there there never was a Bank. One day I met Gordon Stridiron and enquired regarding this question about the bank and here is his reply hope you all enjoy:Hi Ken, Yes there was a bank at Pelaw somewhere near where John Hallidays butchers shop used to be. Miss Nancy Simpson of York Street told me that at one time they could not get the safe door closed and they had a bloke sitting next to the safe with a shotgun! When Wardley Ex Servicemans Association was formed in 1919 they used the bank to deposit money. They held their first meetings at the Station Hotel. I'll try and find some paper work on the bank. All the best, Gordon
Hope this starts of our detectives, hope you enjoy.
