Families like the Ellison were substantial landowners across the UK so that could be one explanation.
Another, very much connected, is that he was a merchant adventurer and since the then, major port for the Americas, Bristol, is fairly close by (13 miles...three hours in those days by coach) there is the strong possibilty of his home and business interests combining.
My last home from which I have just downsized was on land once owned by The Merchant Adventurers Company (founded in Bristol 1552) and that was in South Derbyshire so the influence of families from all those years ago still exists.
