Travelling west on South Shore road from where the Friars Goose winding house stands, cottages stood on the left. These were owned by the local colliery and during a miners strike of 1832, the families were evicted. The eviction was enforced by soldiers from the Northumberland Fusiliers.
A second group of cottages stood to the east of the winding house and were very close to where the Elephant on the Tyne restaurant stood. These were close to Miss Easton's Nest House (The Falcons Nest) of which we had posts recently.
