Huge Rattle and Articulated Magpie Puppet
Posted by George on October 5, 2020, 12:18 am
It was 1953 and my first day at work. Behind a lathe, propped against the wall of the toolroom of Noble & Lund stood two gems of football history. Made in the works pattern shop in 1951, these were believed to be the worlds largest corncrake and articulated magpie puppet. The magpie would doff its top hat when a chord was pulled by the chap holding it. I have just come across a photo showing the two items when they were being taken to Tottenham for the 4th round of the FA cup in 1952. Eventually they made their way to Wembley when Newcastle beat Arsenal 1-0 in the final. Sadly, over the passing years the corncrake and puppet just faded away - a bit like the club. upload pic url
