Once a patient has been referred to the hospital from their doctor for an initial biopsy that person will be allotted or offered one of Kathy's Friends to support them for anything that may happen thereon. The volunteer Kathy's Friend will be there for that patient from day one to any final treatment. It is intended that the friend and will be able to collect travel expenses so they are not out of pocket by helping. The ideal friend we are looking for is maybe a cancer patient in remission who will have to be police checked in all cases. However, all volunteers will initially work with a team of full time nursing staff to understand the various treatments and how cancer affects you emotionally. So, that's the basics. I have a full time organiser within the NHS system and a few nurses within the chemo department at Hartlepool who wanted this to the hilt. If my project is successful it will save the NHS millions of pounds in the long run by not having to spend time making tea and calming patients down. They can spend more time on vital treatment and hopefully save a few more lives. The project has been been suspended on National TV because of the covid-19
Thank you Norman for letting me rattle on a bit!
