Re: 'Ghost Cottages' Further to a recent thread
I know it is progress and the need for industry has priority over almost all else. Certainly sentiment has little importance when it comes to choosing between jobs for the future or memories of the past. However, I can't help feeling saddened at the loss of the tangible evidence this area played in the Battle of Britain. Those buildings housed some of the Few and I agree with Norman, they were situated in a very pleasant rural setting before the inevitable changes came.
On a brighter note, a chap with whom I served my apprenticeship at Noble & Lund lived in Washington. Stevie Dawson was called up for RAF National Service and spent two happy years at RAF Usworth in the 1950s.
