Re: Did you ever see the massive Slag Heap ?
The Slag Heap was like an iceberg - a large part of it was invisible as the early tipping there simply filled the valley of the Bede Burn. The map below (dated 1888-1913) shows how it extended from Bede's Well to the allotments at Pigsty Avenue. Two small branch lines can be seen leaving the Pontop Railway - one toward the west and one to the east, the latter terminating where Wansbeck Road stands now. The large concrete abutments which carried these lines could still be seen in the 1960's. As children we used to play on them. I only ever climbed to the very top of the slag heap on one occasion, but the rest of it was a regular playground.
If the culvert running under the slag heap ever collapses it will be a big job to lay new drainage!
