I did not realise when I posted that the question of now and then had already been answered further down. Interesting all the same. I think the picture of the tram is hauntingly strange with such an empty area around. I followed up on the Jarrow trams and found that even in those days, Jarrow was being screwed by Shields. Gateshead initially seemed willing to join up and make a grand circuit. The Gateshead system continued into the mid 1950s whilst Jarrow hardly got started. My maternal great grandparents sold their land to the tramways company to allow the trams to turn at Heworth towards Pelaw, Hebburn and Jarrow. Then it all went pair-shaped.
