Re: The White Horse
Thanks Barry. Seems like this place near Marsden was probably what Billy and I saw. My only doubt is that we could see the image from miles away. The report says that it was not easily seen from afar as it was only life size. This is strange. I do remember the sight of the horse was the first of two indications that we were "nearly there". The other was the smell of the sea. This sense has diminished as I have aged (as has many other features) Then there was the joy of Whitburn. Just behind a crescent of cottages opposite the cricket ground was the sea and what we presumed to be a wartime relic of a steel boat not much bigger than the average park rowing boat. It was half buried in the sand and here we made our headquarters as we paddled in the water until we were soaked. Back at the dug-out we had our jam sandwiches and bottle of water. Then the agony of the long cycle ride back to Felling, arriving home late at night to be met by an angry but relieved mum. Such bliss.
