I lived with the view of the slag every day and I did explore but not to the extent of you and your pals. You mentioned the crusher and the regular blasting that would take place, I had forgotten those.
On the other hand after my Dad retired he did go off to see what he could find on the Slag Heap much to my Mams consternation he could find all sorts that 'would become useful' one day. Luckily he had the large garden to keep it in. When he died my husband & brother-in-law had to clear this extra large area and we found all this 'junk'.
I left Windermere cres in 1973 and Mam passed away in 2000 so i did visit regularly but can not remember at what point in time did the heap all disappear.
Last year my husband & I took a walk down memory Lane by walking from the Fellgate metro, down York Ave through Monkton Vill then we walked down the back of Windermere and what a difference from the 50's to now. We walked on Jarrow town centre & the metro home.
Happy days living at Windermere Cres, a home with an unusual view.
