Elizabeth I remember the Saturday afternoon Matinees in the Gem were great in the fifties when I was growing up threepence downstairs & a tanner upstairs, watching Hopalong Cassidy, Roy Rogers, Batman n Robin, booing the baddies & cheering the goodies.
I remember my mother taking me to see the Ten Commandments there, having a Mars Bar & a carton of Kiaora whilst watching which was a real treat in those days. I also remember there was a Polish Ice Cream lady/Usherette worked there, can't remember her name, really nice woman. I vaguely remember the Theatre Royal as a burnt out shell when I was a toddler.
