Despite the air pollution when I was growing up, when I was diagnosed with COPD 15 years ago, smoking cigarettes was immediately pounced on as the cause, despite my also having pleural plaque and asbestosis. I blame my surroundings in industry - coke ovens were a prime example, but that was never taken into account.
