I had a feeling this article might interest you.
Three years after the 1888, Kelly's directory, George Clark, aged 63, was living at Ethelbert House, West Hartlepool, and occupied as a Timber Merchant/Saw Miller.
I would think that as a saw miller, he would have supplied planks for church pews.
