Re: Do you read books during lockdown
I am so glad you raised this post Allan as I was about to do something similar. My daughter knows of my love of books and bought me" City of Ghosts" as a Christmas present. Copyright of Chris Rickaby and Barnaby Thompson who write under the pseudonym of Ben Creed, the book describes life in post war Russia at the time of Stalin. The story is horrific and intense but I have struggled almost from page one through to the end because of the characters names. It has been extraordinarily difficult to put a face to names thus allowing me to remember who is who without recourse to constant recapping. Famous names such as Malencov, Lenin, Beria were no trouble. They already had a face and I knew immediately who they were as they came and went in the story. However, when Taneyev, Grechev, Gerrashvili, Lipukin, Tikhon, Nikitin, Eliasberg and a host more dip in and out - it is confusing and recapping loses the thread. If only there was a way to Anglicize all the names to Billy, Harry, Betty etc. etc. I hope I have explained my dilemma as the book is the first in a trilogy and I wonder how other people cope or perhaps they don't have my problem.
