There was also a Whinney Lane which led from Victoria Road down to the river, opposite Hartleyburn Avenue. My assumption is that the name was given from the horse whinney's as they struggled uphill with a cart full of cargo from the river. The names were very literal back then if that helps with Cutthroat Dene
