Brian, When I was very young, a survey found that comics such as the Beano, Dandy, Knockout, Radio Fun and Film Fun, improved children's grammar. My daughter didn't read books and to encourage her, I gave her one of my Just William books. She soon learned to say such things as "Oh Heck" and "Gosh" and became an avid reader. My favourite comic was the Knockout. What was yours?
