I dont remember a 1D Ray but there were some with letters.I think that it was the 26A that went from Jarrow to Sunderland.
AS a child I was on it oncw a week and as I recall it went up York Ave, then along Hedworth Lane and onwards via BOldon.
I could have the number wrong though!!
