I suspect that a young girl was being taken for a ride.
As regards silly placement of items that often need replacing. Certain models/ years of Renault Clio’s have either the brake or clutch master cylinders in a bad place and to change them requires a a certain amount of engine dismantling to do the job.
The pal who told me that used to work in a local garage that specialised in problem jobs. He retired 10 months ago.
Main dealers would send their high end cars to them for repairs first because the dealers Workshop’s did not have the capacity or the skills to do the jobs never mind the Labour costs. They would replace not repair.
One type of thing was if I remember correctly changing a part in Gearbox which cost about £5. The main dealer would have installed a new gearbox but these lads just worked on it for 12 hours cost about £500. The cost of a replacement gearbox up in the £1,000’s.
I am fully aware of car maintenance costs but that depends on the make of car. The Labour rate for a BMW dealer can be £150 or more, parts very expensive. My pal was until last year was a service manager at a BMW main dealer.
Some 10 years ago I was able to see a job sheet for a Ferrari. The costs astounded me, a litre of oil was £220.
My car is due it’s 9 th year service. I buy all parts and oils and supply to the main dealer to use.
Yes I could save money taking car to my local garage for service but choose not to. I use the local for any repairs as Labour rate is £50 instead of £90 or more.
