In Hartlepool University Hospital we have had one man working there as a volunteer in the chemotherapy dept for about 2 years now. The project is called kathy's Friends. Still in experimental stages because of the pandemic. The organisation itself is being organised and managed from North Tees University Hospital. I Began this by watching people in cancer waiting rooms nervously waiting alone. Macmillan Cancer Support say that no one should face cancer alone. My project will insure that no one will in years to come or even sooner because we intend to spread this throughout the UK. Volunteers will be trained to understand the different types of chemotherapy and the psychological effects of it. When they do, they will work one to one with a cancer patient in a social manner and not clinical. Already our man Colin at Hartlepool is doing so well that the chemo nurses can get on with their job instead of using precious time pre socialising and making coffee. Helen Ford from Tyne Tees TV is standing by ready to do an article on it when we begin again and once that is done it will make national TV. However Mike,the project is still barely up and running but in a few months we will go flat out to ensure no one will face cancer alone.Colin works at Hartlepool hospital on Fridays.
