More recently I have requests from prospective buyers, asking if I can tell them a little more about my book before they buy.
This is not a problem, so here goes.
“The Life and Observations of a Hebburn Lad”.
Michael Lynch a former Hebburn and Durham County Councillor has published his biography:- “The Life and Observations of a Hebburn Lad”. He was at the time the youngest ever member of Hebburn Urban District Council and Durham County Council.
After leaving Hebburn to live in Cambridgeshire he became Mayor of St. Ives and a Huntingdon District Councillor.
He originally wrote his biography as a memento for his six grandchildren but was then persuaded by his wife Sheila to go public and publish his mementoes as a book.
Michael self published 200 copies of his book in March last year, to raise money for 4 charities the British Heart Foundation, Cancer Research UK, Marie Curie and Huntingdon Community Cancer Network. The books sold out within 12 weeks and he was oversubscribed.
In order to meet the demand for his book, with the help and assistance of a neighbour Medical Student, the structure and format of the book was amended to meet “Amazons" production requirements.
The result is the book is now available on “Amazon both in “Paperback” and as a “Kindle Version”, at:-
The book takes you from his early school days at St. Aloysius in Hebburn to his working career from Mining Apprentice at Wardley Colliery, RWT Engineering, Hawthorne Leslies, one Merchant Sea trip with Souter Brothers, British Die Casting at North Shields to becoming Chair of a successful NHS Business, with 750 Staff and budget of £170Million.
Many Hebburn and Wardley families are mentioned in the book together with many photos.
At the age of 19 he became the Chairman of the National Association of Youth Clubs, National Members Council, representing 360,000 youth club members. He also won a 3 week scholarship to the USSR in 1961.
Along the way he had tea with the Queen Mother at St. James Palace in 1961, met (and spoke with) HM the Queen and HRH the Duke of Edinburgh in 1978 and later met other Royals, Government Ministers and many VIP’s. In the early 80’s he commuted to London, occasionally travelling with his MP John Major, later to become Prime Minister
His last job as an employee of British Gas, before he set up his own Management Consultancy, was as the Project Development Manager of the Greenwich Peninsula, obtaining the planning consents and cleaning up the 320 acres of contaminated land to prepare the way for what exists there today including the O2 Arena site.
It is a contemporary social history of a working class secondary schoolboy who failed the 11+ who went on to have a successful and varied business, civic and social life.
The book is still selling and copies have been purchased in the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Cyprus, France, Holland and the Czech Republic.
