Just past that steelwork was another pier one made from steel which was just a foot above the water that went out into the lake. It was perfect for swimming from. I have pointed out where the allotments were. Well between them and Leslies concrete fence was a water filled deep quarry. Cork had been dumped in the water from a ship yard and it floated on the surface so the water was hidden. The area of water looked like a flat sandy field. When we threw a stone in the cork dispersed for seconds, revealing water. No health & safety in those days. We knew about the danger because our parents had warned it was a bottomless quarry.
